AP U.S. History
Prerequisites: History 10; teacher approval is recommended.
Who the course is designed for: strong and motivated 11th (or 12th) grade History students who enjoy reading and discussion. This course is NOT connected with AP English.
Students with unusual dedication and talent in the field of History are encouraged to take on the challenge of Advanced Placement United States History. This course covers essentially the same content as the regular course but uses an advanced college-level text in order to delve into the material in greater conceptual depth and historical detail. Students will continue to develop reading, writing, and thinking skills, making extensive use of primary source documents and engaging in daily class discussions. The course begins in 1877 after Reconstruction and examines the growth of the nation through Vietnam, the Reagan years and contemporary issues such as terrorism, nuclear proliferation and the role of the government in the economy. Students are required to take the United States History Advanced Placement Exam in May, and two weeks of that month are devoted to reviewing all of American history in preparation for the exam.
