We Believe Great People Who are Good Can Change the World

The world doesn’t just need great doers, thinkers, makers and leaders — it needs those people to be really good people, too.

We have so much to tell you — Our combination of hands-on academics, athletics, outdoor education, arts programming and passionate educators all align to help students discover their strengths and see the value of using those strengths to be a positive force in their communities and the world at large.

Village School Academics/
Curriculum

Leaving on a hike or road trip without a map is probably not a good idea — you can get lost pretty easily. That’s why we’ve put so much effort into planning our Village School academics. Every single subject, lesson and activity is part of a cohesive, researched plan that’s been intentionally designed to help students learn, grow and head in the right direction.

Village School Physical Education

Healthy habits — it’s never too early to start building them. Physical education plays a large role in our Village School experience because it teaches students the importance of physical wellbeing, mobility, resilience and teamwork. These are all skills that will serve them well throughout their education and into life. As students journey through Village School, they receive an appropriate progression in their physical education.

At Chadwick’s Village School, Character Isn’t Just Taught — It’s Lived.

Our Village School K-5 educational experience is delivered through the lens of our Core Values of compassion, fairness, honesty, respect and responsibility. From the very first day of kindergarten, the Core Values are modeled and supported on a daily basis — informing every lesson, interaction and activity.

Village student stands with their mouth open, amazed at their screen-printing art piece.

Village School Art and Music

Every student has a unique voice that’s all their own. We help them find it. Students in kindergarten all the way through fifth grade get a broad, beneficial introduction to different kinds of visual arts and music. We see this as an essential part of a young child’s education. It shows them how to communicate and interact with the world around them. It also inspires curiosity, creativity and teaches them valuable technical skills they can use moving forward.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS

Village School STEM

“Why?” It’s a question that children love to ask, and it’s a question we love to hear in our Village School STEM program. Twice a week, students are given time to wonder, discover and create through hands-on class and lab work. They study ideas and concepts that bring together different elements of Earth, space, life and physical sciences as well as technology, robotics, coding and more. And by “study” we mean get very hands-on.

The world is a remarkably big place, but at the same time, it’s also wonderfully small. Right from the start, we show students the importance of different cultures, backgrounds and customs. Guiding Each Learner With Care and Intention

At Chadwick, our 8:1 student-to-teacher ratio means every student is known, supported and challenged in meaningful ways. Our educators take the time to build strong, lasting relationships that go far beyond the classroom. They see the whole child, nurture curiosity, and guide each learner with care and intention.

Sixth-Grade Academics/Curriculum

What’s the first thing you do when you walk to the water’s edge for a swim? You dip a toe, test the water and then dive in. Sixth grade at Chadwick is the educational equivalent: it prepares students to dive headfirst into Middle School! It’s an approach unique to Chadwick and one that has proven highly effective.

Sixth-Grade Athletics

The formula for a well-rounded, lifelong learner definitely includes at least a few drops of sweat. By connecting students’ intellectual and physical selves, we’re able to enhance their overall development — the two sides balance and support each other. That’s why athletics in sixth grade, much like our academics and arts programming, are a gentle introduction to what lies ahead in the Middle and Upper Schools.

Individual and team sports offer Sixers an opportunity to accelerate their growth and find new ways to rely on themselves. There are many options to choose from, including basketball, baseball, flag football, track and field, yoga, soccer, softball, volleyball and water polo.

Sixth-Grade Global Education

When we’re young, our world is relatively small. We know our home, our immediate neighborhood, our school — but as we get older, we realize the world is a big, beautiful, fascinating place filled with different people, cultures, places and perspectives. Chadwick Sixers don’t have to wait until high school to open their eyes to the larger world around them. because we provide an early and immmersive introduction to global education.

Collaboration with Chadwick International

From the very beginning of the sixth grade, students begin to understand that the world is both vast and deeply connected — and that learning can cross oceans. In English and social studies, for example, select units are co-designed and co-taught with teachers from Chadwick International, our sister school in South Korea. This collaboration gives students a firsthand look at both the shared traits and the cultural differences between peers who live across the Pacific.

Sixth-Grade Leadership and Character

At Chadwick, our sixth graders start the school year feeling like students in Village School — and end the year feeling like full fledged Middle Schoolers. It’s remarkable how much growth and change can take place in such a short period of time. This is because at every step of their journey, Sixers are challenged, supported and inspired to be their best selves academically and socially.

Sixth-Grade Arts

Art is magic. We make sure that magic stays alive and well in students’ hearts as they grow up! It’s for that important reason that Sixers receive dedicated time in the visual and performing arts, making sure their ability to appreciate and create art leads into a desire to express themselves creatively. They work with expert, passionate artistic educators who open the door for students to express their personal experiences and cultural perspectives and to begin to critically interpret, evaluate and respond to art. Performing Arts

Creative expression really comes to life here in a variety of shapes and forms. Sixers are given the opportunity to choose and pursue one of the instruments found in our symphonic orchestra, and they can even join the ensemble to perform concerts throughout the year. There is also a vocal chorus, where students with a passion for singing can learn and perform music in different genres, languages and arrangements. Then there’s musical theater — this engaging co-curricular builds skills in music, acting, dance and includes a final musical project!

In the Middle School, students have their first opportunities to travel domestically and internationally, applying lessons from the classroom to real-world experiences. A group of middle schoolers head to Chadwick International in South Korea each fall for the annual Songdo 7s Soccer Tournament. This trip brings students from around the globe together, building community and cultural competence.

Middle School Leadership and Character

Seventh grade and eighth grade are a time of perpetual change and relentless self-discovery. Every day, students are learning who they are — and how to be the person they want to be. And every day, they are presented with new challenges.

Middle School Arts

Art in the Middle School gives students the opportunity to explore exciting and nuanced parts of themselves. They deepen their relationship with different artistic disciplines and are allowed to express themselves in a safe environment surrounded by supportive teachers and peers. They begin to experiment and learn in increasingly more structured and goal-oriented classes and project-based experiences. This helps focus their efforts and shows them how their passion can result in truly great outcomes. It’s a unique and valuable chance for adolescents to explore their identity and start a journey through the arts.

Developing New Perspectives

Being able to connect with the people around you brings true developmental benefits. Students in seventh and eighth grade are given multiple outlets for their creative energy that also bring them closer to their community, help them develop new perspectives and build their ability to empathize.

Upper School Academics/Curriculum

Because we teach through experiences, it’s natural for our Upper School students to take a hands-on approach to their academics and co-curriculars. Instead of sitting at their desk and taking notes while their teacher delivers a lecture, they’re up at the front of the room working things out on the board or in the lab. They’re chatting with teachers before and after class. They’re tossing out ideas with peers, getting feedback and mastering concepts as a whole. Our curriculum lends itself to student agency and ownership of their learning.

How do you define a champion? At Chadwick, our athletic programming is an exceptional way to teach our Core Values of respect, responsibility, honesty, fairness and compassion. These are all qualities that champions possess and display. The success of Chadwick’s Athletics Program stems from student-athletes who live and breathe our Core Values. From practice to game day, our athletes are coached to compete with character. They learn to both lead and support teammates, to respect their opponents and to persevere through challenges on and off the field.

Upper School Outdoor Education

The ability to succeed, lead and affect change all require one very important trait: confidence. And earned confidence is not something that just appears suddenly one day. It’s the result of years of hard work, self-discovery, personal growth and the overcoming of challenges — all outcomes of our powerful and enlightening Outdoor Education program.

Developing Resilience and Independence

Each adventure over the Upper School years builds upon the last, culminating in the renowned "Senior Course," a rite of passage for Chadwick students since 1976. These Outdoor Education experiences also help students develop resilience and independence as they spend time away from home, while making meaningful connections with each other through shared adventures.

An Empathetic Mindset

Chadwick Upper School students choose from a variety of service events and programs that include staffing local soup kitchens, traveling on international service trips, teaching in underserved schools, reading to our own kindergarten students, or supporting families and organizations all around our local and global community. We find that once students understand their role in changing the world, they build lifelong habits and an empathetic mindset that carries them into their adult lives.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Building a truly inclusive community takes consistent work, honest reflection and a willingness to grow together. While we’re proud of our efforts to date, we know our work is not done. Diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) are part of how we show up every day in every part of school life — just as our founder, Margaret Chadwick, intended.

Wellness At Every Level

Across all grade levels, students are provided the tools, space and encouragement to take ownership of their well-being through learning how to develop healthy habits, emotional awareness and the confidence to ask for support when they need it. That foundation helps them navigate school, relationships and life with resilience.

Today’s Student Groups Produce Tomorrow’s Leaders —

Chadwick has more than 50 student-led clubs and organizations, making our campus a vibrant place full of curiosity, discovery and self-expression. These groups thrive on the energy of our students and offer tremendous leadership opportunities. Students who step into those roles practice responsibility and commitment while developing sophisticated management and interpersonal skills. Clubs are open to everyone, and students connect with classmates and faculty based on shared interests, talents and school initiatives.
